Imagination Versus Reality (2003)

The perception
of reality is sometimes more important than the actual facts involved. Not
always, but many times, our perception of reality limits our functioning within
the sphere of reality. For those whose definition of reality becomes obscured,
there is always some kind soul to describe them as mentally ill. However,
mental illness is a label that is sometimes thrown wildly about, but without a
thorough exploration or consideration of what the words really mean. What is
normal is not always obvious. The person providing the definition for mental
illness might himself suffer from the same. There is a fine line between how we
define sanity and how someone else does. Sometimes we experience a traumatic
event and our coping mechanism is our imagination. Sometimes that thin line
between reality and imagination disappears. And so the question of why we never
doubt it when certain people say that God has spoken to them, (i.e. a preacher,
pastor, or some well educated individual), but when someone whom we view as
mentally imbalanced or ill says the same thing, we automatically write it off to
their insanity. It might be well to remember that Jim Jones was once, both a
preacher and pastor, who attracted certain notable people, including President
Jimmy Carter’s wife. If our society would listen more to those we think are
mentally ill than to those we think are religious leaders, we might be better
off.
