The carnival Mardi Gras mask is hiding the representation of something which superstition has created, something which is given the credit by some who do not believe in a higher source when something good happens to them. For me there is no such thing as luck or coincidence, only divine intervention or divine allowance. We determine the ultimate outcome for ourselves, and whether it is for the good or the bad, it is sometimes dependent upon how we view adversity and blessing. There was a man who won the lottery in the city in which I live and he had been married for over 20 years, and he was very involved in his church. His pastor even went with him to collect the prize. He was thrilled and he spoke of how he would use his blessings from God. Within 4 years he had committed suicide, a sad and broken man. The full story appeared in the Houston Press and is symbolic of the fact that what might appear to be a blessing or a stroke of luck, might not be everything we think it is.
