Rachel is one of the four matriarchs of Judaism, along with Sarah, Rebecca, and Leah. She is also kind of a bridge between Judaism and Christianity; at least it is presented in the New Testament as such. It is in the slaughter of the innocents, where Herod supposedly had all children under the age of two in Bethlehem killed. There is still a legacy of sadness, even if that event did not occur in history. This work symbolizes the sadness a mother feels when her children grow up and they are no longer dependent upon her. It is also a statement about the technology and industry, which is polluting the world at the same time it, propels the world into progress. The motorcycles are basically a male symbol that also implies the relationship between a mother and son. The quiet resignation of an inability to make her offspring choose the safe over the dangerous, is also presented. The same can almost be said of the nation Israel and the violence between the Palestinians and Israelis.
